2016 Spring/Summer Makeup and Hair Trends

When creating my advertisements, editorial and catwalk looks I wanted to incorperate the 2016 spring/summer makeup and hair trends that were seen in London, Paris, Milan and New York Fashion Week. I want all my looks to be very on trend and current, to give mac a very up to date and stylish image. The looks created on the catwalk showcased the future trends that are predicted to be popular in spring/summer 2016. I looked at the Cosmopolitan magazine to see what brands predicted what trends so that I could see what trends were being repeated and would therefore be more popular. The results are as follows.

Louis Vuitton showcased a hippy doll-like look using dramatic eye lashes on the top and bottom lash line. The doll-like look was created by putting the lower lashes lower than the natural lower lash line to make the eyes look bigger and more round, like a doll. It also looks like the model in the image above is wearing coloured contacts, giving the eyes a more artificial and dramatic look; the contacts also make the eyes look bigger because there is more of a solid line around the colour. Tiny plaits were added randomly in the hair, giving a youthful and hippie look.

Chanel gave the models a wash of blue eye shadow across the eyes in the shape of bandit masks for their All Blue Rhythm Collection. I don't think the mask look is going to catch on with the public.. however the use of blue eye shadow could become a popular trend. The hair was put into pigtails and then joined at the back with double barrettes. This hair looked was designed by Sam McKnight.

Givenchy chose to either decorate the models' faces in elaborate jewellery or they wore the spooky makeup shown above. The eyes were shaded in a deep brown all over the eye and brought down to give a heavy and slightly ill look. The eye brows were then bleached out to give an almost alien look to the models. The rest of the face looked very natural and the lips looked to be left bare. The hair was put in a middle part and smoothed down and behind the ears.

Jenny Packham chose makeup artist Talia Sparrow to create this bright, colourful makeup look. She gave the models a light turquoise eye liner with a wing and a bright red lip; all Laura Mercier products. The models all had very dewy looking skin to finish off this spring ready look. The hair was parted in the centre and kept natural looking.

Alexander Wang chose makeup artist Diane Kendal to create this barely there makeup look. She wanted it to look like the models weren't wearing any makeup but that they were well groomed. She only used a moisturiser on the skin and then hair stylist Gudio just accentuated each model's natural hair texture to create individual looks.

Nicholas K chose Macadamia Professional's Ambassador Giannandrea Marongiu to create this ponytail look that he called the 'back knot'. He smoothed all the hair back into a low ponytail and then only pulled half the hair through the hand band to create this loop shape. He then concealed the hair band with a thin section of loose hair. He added hair extensions if the model needed more length.

Public School chose hair stylist Allen Ruiz to create this rope braid. He smoothed back the hair with hair gel and tied it into a ponytail on the crown of the head. He then split the hair into two equal sections and started twisting them around each other to create this rope shape. He took a loose section of hair to conceal the hand band.

The Most Popular Trends

I noticed that many of the predicted trends from each brand were repeated in different brands which makes me think that the predictions are being confirmed. The repeated trends are as follows:
- Wet-look hair continued to be used, whether it was to create a slick, glamorous look or a messy, more greasy looking hair look. The brands that used this included Mark Jacobs, Julien MacDonald, Christopher Kane and Keno.
- Deep side parts were used time and time again in different hair styles, from neat pony tails to messy quiffs. The brands that featured this trend included Creatures of the Wind, Herve Leger by Max Azria, David Koma and Keno.
- Pigtails were modernised and re-invented for spring/summer 2016, for example Paul Smith gave their models a twisted pigtails look. She split the hair in two equal parts, used hair curlers to curl the hair away from the face and then put them into two low bunches. She then twisted both sections and crossed them over each other in a figure of eight to achieve this fun but elegant look. Another example is when Chanel put the hair into pigtails and then joined them together at the back with double barrettes.
- Exaggerated eye lashes were featured on many catwalk shows to either give a doll-like eye shape or to give a 60s look. For example, Louis Vuitton showcased a hippy doll-like look using dramatic eye lashes on the top and bottom lash line. Another example is how Marni's makeup was all about the sparse but exaggerated eye lashes.
- Black kohl liner was used to give a grungy look to make of the makeup looks or just to add drama. Chloe gave their models a very natural face but then added some black kohl liner along the top and bottom water line and then smudged it out slightly to give a grunge and worn-in makeup look. Issa used this black liner along the lower lash line in a thick stripe and also used it in the water lines to give a very exaggerated lash line.
- Luminous skin was featured in almost every catwalk makeup look! The glowy skin gives the models a healthy and fresh glow. It was achieved with different techniques, for example Alexander Wang used just a moisturiser on bare skin, but then Opening Ceremony created the glow on their models using clear lip gloss.
- Graphic liner was a main feature in many catwalk looks. For example, Creatures of the Wind created a think black wing liner and then layered it with gold glitter. Another example is when Zero + Maria Cornejo used white paint to smudged on the outer edge of the eye. My favourite example is when Ashish created a think wing lined using only sequins because it drew so much attention and it was very different from anything else I saw.
- Braids were used to decorate the hair of many models. One of my favourite braided looks would be Public School's rope braid because it is very slick and glossy looking, making it look very sophisticated and polished. A more messy and relaxed example would be Giles' dual-braid where there were braids going down each side and then down the back with lose fly aways to give a more romantic look.
- The 60s theme was featured in many looks which could catch on as a new spring/summer trend. Jeremy Scott created a cartoon like 60s look with an exaggerated wig and bold eye liner in the shape of eyelashes. Roksanda gave their models a 60s themed look with the front of the hair being crimped and the back of the hair straightened.
- Fake tan by St Tropez was incorporated into some of the looks which makes me think that a glowing tan will be very popular in spring/summer 2016. House of Holland applied two coats of the Instant Tan all over the face to give a warm, golden glow which was then bronzed further using a matte bronzer. Julien MacDonald gave the models glowing skin using St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Oil.
- Dual textured hair was an interesting trend that I did not expect to see on the catwalk, however it might catch on! PPQ crimped the mid lengths down to give it a frizzy and voluminous texture, which contrasted with the very slick top half. Another example is when Roksanda crimped only the front section of hair and left the back section straight.
- Blue eyes was one of the biggest trends that stood out to me and so many of the brands incorporated it into their catwalk look. Chanel gave the models a wash of blue eye shadow across the eyes in the shape of bandit masks. Missoni would have to be one of my favourite catwalk looks for this season because I think the deep skin of the model and the royal blue look so luxurious and rich together. I also love that the makeup doesn't look too precise but it looks more fun and abstract. I also really liked Marc Jacobs take on the blue eye trend, with some blue eye shadow smudged in the inner corner and then lots of mascara because it looks very messy and relaxed, but still sexy.
- Matte red lips are another trend that will become big in spring/summer 2016. I think red lips have been an iconic look for so long, but it specifically matte red lips that will become very popular. Many brands on the catwalk incorporated this trend into their looks, including Jenny Packham, Victoria Beckham, Anna Sui, Oscar De La Renta, Toyshop Unique and Celine.
Metallics were a trend going down the runway and there are so many ways to incorporate this into a look. Prada gave their girls a futuristic gold metallic lip which was the statement of the look. Another example would be how Diane Von Furstenberg gave their girls a beautiful metallic blue/green eye.
