Designing my Hair Charts from Jonathan Saunders' SS16 Look

After looking through many different catwalk looks from many different brands, I wrote a list of the 2016 spring/summer hair trends that were most popularly predicted. I have listed the hair trends that were my favourite and that I think are most suited for Jonathan Saunders' SS16 catwalk look.

Wet-look hair was very popular and was incorporated into the models looks in different ways. Marc Jacobs gave his models very messy and almost greasy looking hair to give a 'morning after night out' look. Julien MacDonald gave their models a wet-look hair style that looked like it was dripping wet! The hair had all been scraped back off the face and then the back was left to hang freely. It didn't look neatly brushed through, it just looked as if the hair naturally clumped together after getting out of the shower or a pool. Mansur Gabriel used the wet-look style to smooth his model's hair down flat against the head. This look is very sleek and clean looking and shows how diverse the wet-look style can be.

Pigtails were modernised and re-invented for spring/summer 2016. Paul Smith gave their models a twisted pigtails look, by splitting the hair in two equal parts and then twisting both sides into a long bun shape at the back of the head. Chanel put their models hair into two low pigtails at the back and then joined them together with double barrettes. Mui Mui gave their models two long pigtails with a middle parting and then pulled their front pieces or fringes out to give a more relaxed and messy look. Marni gave their models two pigtails, with the top half smoothed down with gel and positioned in a wave across the face. The pigtails were then twisted towards the face to give them a quirky look.

Braids were very popular in the catwalk looks. Public School gave their models a very sleek and fierce looking hairstyle, with the hair gelled back very tightly into a high ponytail and then braided into a rope braid. This combines the wet-look hair trend too which I love! Giles gave their models a very relaxed and messy looking dual-braided look, in a half up, half down style; this looked very girly and feminine. Kristian Aadnevik gave their models a relaxed looking braid hair style. They parted the models hair and then gave them two braids going down on either side. These braids were all pinned back to create a half up, half down look. Celine gave the models a very sleek and sophisticated look. The hair was all pulled back into a ponytail and then neatly braided in a plait to give a simple, yet glossy look.

Hair Charts

Jonathan Saunders' Neo-Oriental collection is very feminine, light and girly, with intricate patterns and beautifully light materials. The collection isn't very figure hugging, but the clothes instead give the models shape using flowy, loose materials with a sinched in waist. There is a lot of layering in this collection, giving the outfits movement and body. My three favourite 2016 spring/summer trends are shown above and so I want to incorporate at least one of these into my look. The makeup look that I have chosen has got a dramatic lip colour and shape, with pretty eyes so I don't want the hair to be very dramatic or overly sleek because I want it to have more of a relaxed, feminine feel.

Traditional Chinese Hair
When I designed the makeup look I wanted to make it inspired by traditional Chinese/oriental makeup and then incorporate it with the 2016 spring/summer trends to make it look more modern and keep it looking up to date. I want to do the same thing with the hair design so I looked into traditional Chinese hair to see what inspiration I could take from it.

The hairstyle above looks very etherial and fairytale like. The Chinese love fairytales and fantasy characters and I think this very girly and etherial look would work perfectly with Jonathan Saunders' oriental collection. The top section of hair has been put up in a loose bun on the crown of the head, secured by golden, embroidered accessories. The bottom half of the hair has been left to fall gracefully over the shoulders. The hair looks very glossy, soft and shiny and it looks like the hair has been gently straightened. I like that the hair has been styled and decorated on top, but that it still looks very relaxed and pretty with the messiness of the bun and the random positioning of the loose hair. If I were to do this look for my catwalk, I would need to incorporate some of the 2016 spring/summer trends to give it a more trendy look.

HAYATI. 9 Best Chinese Hairstyle [viewed 8th February 2016].

This is a more traditional oriental hair style worn by the Chinese. The hair has been put into a very loose, but neat bun onto the crown of the head. The hair hasn't been messily scraped back, but has instead got volume in an almost donut shape around the bun. The bun is very oversized, altho it is not very high, it is more wide. The bun has been decorated with detailed jewels and hair clips, with an oversized peach flower on one side of the bun. The hair looks very glossy and silk like, as it does in the image above, which I think is a signature style of the Chinese. If I were to do this hairstyle for my catwalk look, I would need to incorporate 2016 spring/summer trends to keep it up to date.

Hair Chart 1
For this first design I was inspired by the etherial, oriental hairstyle above, where half her hair has been put into a bun and then half has been left loose. I then incorporated the 2016 spring/summer trend of wet-look hair. I didn't want the hair to be scraped back in a very neat and tight way, but I was instead inspired by hairstyle like the models wore for Marc Jacobs to make the hair look more relaxed and messy. I didn't think a very slick look would suit Jonathan Saunders' more soft and feminine clothing. I decided to pull the top half of the hair on top of her head in a messy bun so that ridges were shown and it didn't look brushed. I was then inspired by Julien MacDonalds' girl to create an almost dripping wet look on the bottom half of the hair so that it looks like how it would naturally clump together after being in water. I really like this look, however I think Jonathan Saunders' collection would suit a hair style with more movement to reflect the beautiful light flowing in his clothing.

Hair Chart 2
This hair chart was inspired by the first oriental image I posted above because I liked how the hair was styled so the hair was out of the model's face, but that part of the hair was still down and flowing. I was also inspired by the 2016 spring/summer trend of braiding. I decided to loosely tie half the hair up in a bun to give a slightly messy and relaxed look and then I would have split the ponytail in two halves, plaited either of them and then twisted them round each other into a bun. I will then have pulled the plaits apart slightly to give them more body and to give a messier look. I think the plait would add more fun and detail to the look and it would give a more modern twist on the traditional oriental hair style. I decided to leave the rest of the hair down and possibly blow dry it to give it a glossy finish. I really like this hairstyle, however it may end up looking too messy, instead of relaxed, and I think the bun could pull too much focus away from the makeup and clothing.

Hair Chart 3 (chosen design)
For this design I was inspired by the etherial, oriental hairstyle above, where half her hair has been put into a bun and then half has been left loose. I then incorporated the 2016 spring/summer trend of braiding to keep the hair look very on trend. I decided to first put random, sparse plaits al round her hair, inspired by Louis Vuitton's doll-like girl, to give my model a more of a hippy and relaxed image. I also think it adds a more fun and playful vibe to the hair look which reflects on the colourful and intricate patterns on Jonathan Saunders' clothing. I decided to put the top half of hair into an oversized bun on the top of her head which is a traditional oriental hairstyle and I was inspired by the more traditional Chinese hair style above to make the hair around the bun have volume, but not look messy, making it into a smooth donut shape around the bun. The bun also doesn't look too messy, but still have a lot of body so I will be more careful when creating the bun to try and give it a smooth finish. The lower half of the hair was left down and I want the hair to look as glossy as possible to reflect the natural shine of Chinese hair, but also to give a more polished and feminine feel to the look. I don't want to put too much product into the lower section because I want the hair to be able to flow freely, just like Jonathan Saunders' clothing does. I really like this look and therefore have chosen it as my final hair look!
