Further Inspiration and Ideas for Editorial Shoot

I wanted my editorial to have an underlying message for people to interpret in different ways. Mac cosmetics is very passionate about self expression and creativity so I wanted to do something to show Mac customers that people or society may try to hold you back from being exactly who you want to be, but you can't let them determine the person you are. I think this is a message that many people need to learn from and will therefore relate to. I have looked at images by Rankin including hands shaping or covering the face and I was intrigued to see where I could take this so I did some more research to find the stunning image by Jamie Nelson below.

Jamie Nelson

Jamie Nelson is a fashion and beauty photographer and his Futuristic Black Glove Beauty with model Nora Vai Black editorial shoot really inspired me for my own Mac editorial. The images incorporate black hands covering parts of the face or framing the face to create beautiful by mysterious beauty images. My favourite image from the collection is shown below.

When I saw this image I was immediately draw to it. The colour scheme has been kept very small, which seems to be something I am drawn to as almost all the images I have been attracted to have small colour schemes. I like that it is such a close-up of the model's face because it allows you to see every detail of the makeup. I love the vibrant orange and rich gold against the harsh, dark black of the gloves because it creates a dramatic contrast. I like that the eye brows have been bleached out, but that the hairs are still visible, because dark eye brows may have made the over all image too dark, but it would have looked too alien-like if her eye brows were blocked out completely. I like that the gloves are shiny because it gives them dimension. I think the individual fingers of the gloves would have disappeared if the gloves were matte as no light would reflect off them; I will keep this in mind if I decide to include gloves in my editorial image. I like that the black gloves look like they are suffocating her because it adds a story to the image and shocks the audience. I love that this image could be interpreted in some many different ways because it makes the viewer think about the image and get excited by the possibilities of the image. I like that the model's eyes are shut because it stops you from seeing the emotion in her eyes as I think that either may be too disturbing or it would look too intense. Mac cosmetics doesn't tend to position the model so she has eye contact with the camera because I think that draws you into the eyes instead of looking at the entire image and makeup look. I therefore don't want my model to look into the camera as I want the image to be about the makeup and not the person wearing it.

My Chosen Model
I chose Mireia Bob as my model because I really like how strong get facial structure is, with her pronounced cheek bones and defined jaw line. I like that her eyes are very big but still sexy and elongated because I want her to look very in control and powerful. I like that she is in her mid twenties because she has a certain maturity about her look, but still looks youthful, which is a look that Mac are fond of. I also like that she has dark hair and dark eye brows because I think it adds to her fierce and seductive look. She has modelled in shoots before and she is confident in front of the camera so she will be perfect for the confident and in control look I am after. The editorial image will be a close-up of her face so I chose hr because she has very clear and smooth skin and her skin is very plump, giving me the perfect base for makeup.
