Editorial Hair Design

I wanted to keep the hair design very simple as I didn't want to take much attention away from the makeup look as it is already quite busy; however I still wanted to have a tribal influence in the design.  When people think of tribes they automatically think of African tribes so I wanted to take inspiration from some African hairstyles for my shoot.

The image above shows an African man with a long plait down the middle of his head. I like the simplicity of this look and it inspired me to do a dutch braid running all down the the middle of the head and then going into a regular plait down the back. I would make this braid look slightly messy and as big as I could to give the hair some messy looking volume. I like that braids are a popular 2016 spring/summer trend as it will keep the editorial looking very current. I think this design would look very effective if my model wasn't wearing a the headdress; however I think a lot of the detail would be lost behind the headdress and you would only be able to see the plait running down her neck or over her shoulder.

When I think of African hair I automatically think of a big afro style. I like how fun and messy they can look with lots of volume and texture. My model has naturally curly hair so this hair style would work perfectly if I did some back combing and added some volumizing products. I think this hair would look really fun surrounding the headdress because only the rim of the hair would be showing, almost creation a halo effect. However I am concerned that this big hair look will distract from the rest of the design, making it look too busy and therefore messy.

This is my chosen hair design. I love that I can use my model's natural curly hair type to create this voluminous bun hair style. This hair style is very popular amongst African women and so I like that my design would have some African influence. I liked that the hair style above would be seen all around the headdress, but I thought it would be too over powering, so I decided on a hairstyle that would be seen above the headdress in a slightly more subtle way. I like that the sides of the hair are going to be sleek and smooth looking because it will give a clean and neat look, keeping it simple around the busy makeup look. I also like how this hair style would almost carry on the headdress upwards as the Indonesian tribes usually wear big head accessories so this height would reflect that. To create this hair look I would have to back comb the hair and add volumizing products to give the hair extra texture and body. I would then create a very messy bun shape with a hair elastic and lots of hair grips. I am excited to try out this hair design with the completed look!
